UMBC offers new Research Experiences for Undergraduates in smart computing, big data

The Research Experience for Undergraduates in Smart Computing and Communications will bring together a cohort of 10 undergraduate students to participate in a paid 10-week, full-time research experience from June 7 to August 13. When Amanda Knapp heard last fall from Anupam Joshi, professor and chair of computer science and electrical engineering, that his department wanted to offer online tutoring to students in their courses, she was ready to help make it happen. Six student groups recently vied for the top prize in UMBC’s annual Idea Competition, presenting to a panel of alumni judges their innovative solutions to everyday challenges. NASA awards UMBC team $1.4M to develop AI that improves how computers process climate data from satellites

“Now we have so much raw data. So how do we analyze it? How do we make it useful for the research community?” asks Jianwu Wang. As data archives balloon, the capabilities of artificial intelligence are rapidly increasing. There is also an urgent need to understand Earth’s systems as they shift due to climate change. All of these factors drove Wang and his collaborators to find ways to help researchers access satellite data much faster. Two UMBC student teams win USM COVID-19 app challenge

Earlier this summer, the University System of Maryland (USM) COVID-19 Task Force invited members of the USM community to develop mobile apps that would help Maryland residents respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the six winning teams just announced are two groups from UMBC. One team developed an app to support the healthcare of people with COVID-19. During the COVID-19 pandemic, internet access has become more critical, with people relying on it to work, learn, and connect with family and friends. However, the internet is not equally accessible to all people. Flood Bot: UMBC researchers expand flood warning work in Ellicott City

Ellicott City, a town about five miles from UMBC, suffered devastating flooding in 2016 and 2018. These events left residents and officials wondering how technology could help predict future severe weather events, potentially saving lives and property. In response, UMBC’s Nirmalya Roy received funding from NSF to develop a rapid flood warning system for Ellicott City, combining sensor data and social media monitoring. UMBC researchers receive NSF RAPID grant to speed COVID-19 detection through a deep neural network

A research team from UMBC and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) has received a Rapid Response Research (RAPID) grant from the National Science Foundation to detect COVID-19 infections earlier through computing. Aryya Gangopadhyay, professor of information systems at UMBC and PI on the grant, explains that this work will use machine learning to improve the speed and accuracy of COVID-19 diagnosis, helping to limit spread of the disease. UMBC’s Jiaqi Gong receives $1M NIH grant for wearable sensor to help breast cancer survivors maintain complex medication schedules

The goal of the project is to design an intelligent, wearable sensor system for breast cancer survivors to help them more closely follow their prescribed medication routine. “We will focus on understanding the links between environmental, personal, and behavioral contexts of medication-taking behavior,” Gong says. Through a $370,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, UMBC researchers are using a wristband to collect stress level information from first responders during simulations that mimic on-call situations.
