Six UMBC Graduates Among Inaugural America East Presidential Scholar-Athletes

Six UMBC student-athletes were among the 48 America East student-athletes named to the conference’s inaugural Presidential Scholar-Athlete class for their outstanding academic achievements throughout their collegiate careers. Approved by the America East Board of Presidents last June and implemented for 2013-14 academic year, the Presidential Scholar-Athlete award recognizes graduating student-athletes who compiled a cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.75 or higher as an undergraduate student. UMBC Swimming and Diving’s McKissick Featured in Sports Illustrated

UMBC Swimming and Diving rising sophomore Andrew McKissick (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph’s) is featured in the “Faces in the Crowd” section of the June 23 issue of Sports Illustrated. The issue began hitting newsstands and mailboxes on Wednesday, June 18. McKissick won the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim for the second consecutive year back on Sunday, June 8. The Retriever swimmer bested the field of over 600 competitors in the 4.4-mile open-water swim with a time of just under 90 minutes (1:29:35), which also beats his winning time of 1:31.46 from 2013. Tim Hall, Athletics, To Chair NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics

UMBC Director of Athletics Tim Hall has been elected as the chairman of the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics for the fall of 2014, the committee announced last month at their meetings in Orlando, Fla. Hall, who has served on the 15-member, multi-divisional committee since 2011, replaces current CWA chair Marilyn Moniz-Kaho’ohanohano of the University of Hawaii. He had previously chaired the CWA/MOIC (Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee) Disability Subcommittee from 2012-14. Kim Berghaus ’14, Earns Second Career America East All-Academic Team Honor

UMBC senior tennis standout Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) was named to the 2014 America East Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team, the conference announced on May 23. Through the fall 2013 semester, Berghaus had posted a 3.84 grade-point average in physics and with minors in economics and mathematics. She earned President’s List honors by posting a 4.0 GPA during three of her first seven semesters as a Retriever. Men’s soccer ranked no. 7 in nation by NSCAA

The defending America East champion UMBC men’s soccer team opens its conference season this weekend ranked no. 7, nationally, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Over the past two weeks, UMBC has climbed nearly 20 spots. The latest rankings mark the first time in the team’s history to crack the top ten. On Saturday, the team will travel to Hartford to open defense of their 2012 America East crown. Four UMBC alumni are among the 98 invitees for the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, where the U.S. men seek to defend their title in Denver, Colorado on July 10-19, 2014. Four UMBC alums competed in Major League Lacrosse’s Championship Weekend, held at Harvard University Stadium in Boston, Mass on August 25 and 26, 2012. Attackman Drew Westervelt is a member of the 2012 champion Chesapeake Bayhawks, while Brendan Mundorf, Peet Poillon and Terry Kimener competed for the runner-up Denver Outlaws. UMBC Men’s Soccer Program Selected to Finish Fourth in 2012 America East Conference

The UMBC men’s soccer program was selected to finish fourth in the 2012 America East Conference race by the league’s eight head coaches. The Retrievers placed fourth in the conference in 2011, earning a place in the six-team postseason tournament for the third consecutive year. Chase Plummer ’14 Selected to America East Second Team

Sophomore forward Chase Plummer was selected to the America East Conference Second Team, it was announced today at the University of Harford, site of the 2012 championships. At the end of the regular season, the 6’6″ Plummer was the only player in the conference to be ranked in the top five in both scoring (fourth) and rebounding (fifth). He produced one of the most prolific sophomore seasons in UMBC’s 26-year NCAA Division I history, scoring 446 points, one shy of the all-time record for a sophomore, set by Peter Mulligan in the 2001-02 campaign. Student-Athletes Post Record-Setting Semester in the Classroom

UMBC’s student-athletes posted a record-setting semester in the classroom in the fall of 2011. Sixty-two percent (209) of Retriever student-athletes recorded grade-point averages of 3.00 or better, which is the highest figure since these statistics have been reported. Jay Greene Returns to UMBC Basketball, Joins Staff as Assistant Coach

Jay Greene, one of the most successful and popular players in UMBC basketball history, has returned to his alma mater as an assistant men’s basketball coach, Head Coach Randy Monroe announced today. UMBC Men’s Soccer Receives Votes In Two Preseason Polls

The UMBC men’s soccer team has garnered votes in two national preseason soccer rankings and has been tabbed as the second choice amongst America East Conference coaches in the league’s preseason poll. UMBC was the only America East squad to earn votes in the NSCAA Division I national rankings and College Soccer News’ 2011 Pre-Season Top 30 poll. The NSCAA rankings included 25 teams, plus 14 teams which received votes, while CSN’s poll included 12 squads receiving votes.
